About the Faculty The Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS CU) is the second newest faculty of Charles University in Prague. Shortly after its creation in 1990 it became a regional centre of teaching and research in economics, sociology, political science, international relations, area studies, media studies and journalism. Currently the Faculty has around 4 000 full-time students. Approximately 150 of them are enrolled in English language degree programmes. FSS CU has one of the highest international mobility participation rates of all the faculties of Charles University. FSS CU emphasizes the development of foreign cooperation by developing and strengthening scientific bonds, student and academic mobility and by offering English language degree programmes. The Faculty regularly organizes guest lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences in English. They take place in cooperation with the Faculty’s partner universities in Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. About The University Charles University in Prague (CU) was founded in 1348 by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV as the first university to the north of the Alps and to the east of Paris. It is the oldest and the largest university in the Czech Republic. Furthermore, it belongs among the oldest and largest universities in the world. In the “Webometrics Ranking of World Universities" CU ranks as no. 1 in Central and Eastern Europe and as no. 2 in whole Europe. In the “Shanghai University's Academic Ranking of World Universities”, CU was placed in the top 300 among the world’s 2% top universities and the 100 top European universities. Today CU has 17 faculties, 3 university institutes, 6 further centres for educational, scientific, research, development and other activities or for provision of information services and 5 university-wide special facilities.
